The First Freeze is Bend’s wildest hill challenge, and everyone’s invited. Run it. Ride it. Tackle one lap with a team or take on all of them solo. Each lap up Pilot Butte must be faster than the last, testing your pacing, grit, and strategy. At the summit, you’ll find music, hot drinks, and the kind of community that makes the climb worth it.

Race Day registration is available. It will take place at the top of Pilot Butte. On site registration will close at 9:10am.
THE CHALLENGE
Conquer the infamous Pilot Butte with a twist: every lap must be faster than the one before it.
THE CATEGORIES
Bike: 6 laps of pure strategy
Team Bike: 6 laps with up to 6 racers
Run : 3 laps, getting harder
Team Run: 3 Laps with up to 3 racers
Each Lap is 2.2 miles with 465ft of gain This is a bike or run event. You may choose which.
THE RULES
Each lap must be faster than the previous one (negative splits)
The participant with the fastest total time (across all qualifying laps) wins.
Each lap begins at the top, and ends again the next time you get to the top.
Race officials will verify all splits and bestow the "Straight COLD" Iced Crown to champions in all 4 categories

NOVEMBER 8th 2025 - 10am - 2pm
Race Starts at the very top of Pilot Butte. Arrive at top by 9:30 to pick up timing strap, t-shirt, and hot bevy!
